Juan DiazThe "Baby Bull"Former unified WBA, WBO, IBF, and IBO Lightweight World Champion, Juan Diaz, began boxing at the age of 8. After a prolific amateur career, where he earned two National Silver Gloves Championships and amassed a record of 105 wins with only 5 losses, Juan turned pro at age 16. In four short years, he became one of the youngest title holders in boxing history, earning his first world championship at the age of 20. Along the way, he fought the best in his division en route to six successful title defenses. By the age of 24, Juan had become the unified champion of the lightweight division.
Juan’s style of non-stop punching and relentless pressure earned him the nickname, “Baby Bull.” In 2009, Juan’s fight against Juan Manuel Marquez was voted “Fight of the Year” by ESPN.com, Ring Magazine, and the Boxing Writers Association of America . Even with his rigorous boxing schedule, Juan graduated from high school with honors and received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Houston-Downtown. When asked about the challenge of being a world champion boxer while excelling in school, Juan said, “I am a student first. Boxing is just my hobby.” Juan’s commitment to education continues. He actively supports Houston’s local schools where he appears regularly and encourages students to attend classes, listen to and respect their parents, and pursue their education. |
